A Powerful Milestone when Liam Rosenior Transcends Barriers

"He is an excellent tactician who understands football inside out, which is what matters most.

"But, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest if I said this news doesn't move me."

These were the sentiments of Paul Canoville, who made his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their new head coach following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the multi-club BlueCo that also controls Chelsea.

Statistics show only 12 black head coaches – not including individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is he grew up and developed his game locally, he understands the local fans," continued Canoville.

"When kids see someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a family that champions equality… that's powerful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents a massive step for Chelsea, for the capital, for every aspiring individual dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Do the Numbers Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' manager back in the nineties and became the top flight's first African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current Premier League gaffer of colour.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game corresponds with an absence of representation at executive level.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight players come from black heritage.

However, research by Kick It Out revealed only 3.2% of board and senior leadership management teams across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching level, based on data provided by eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching roles – encompassing head coaches – from the same 11 clubs, the figure is just five percent.

"He's certainly made history in terms of his appointment as a Chelsea head coach, and we hope to see more of that," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is a wealth of talent present within black and underrepresented communities... aspiring coaches want a chance to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to continue to work hard to break those obstacles down."

Furthermore, Rosenior will become the fourth full-time British head coaches currently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's remaining big five divisions in terms of homegrown managers.

Sixteen of the 20 top-flight coaches in Italy are Italian, Eleven of the 20 are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany while 10 of the 18 in France.

Current Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure all young English managers from an academy background are, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's really motivating for up-and-coming British academy coaches to witness an individual get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is on merit'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, played for the likes of Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a brief spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List for services rendered to tackling inequality within the sport and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He began penning a column for a national newspaper, and in one piece he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine ability arguing that opportunities must be awarded on merit.

He further expressed the view he has often stated: how vast lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "passionate", noting that he understood the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him with a move from Strasbourg to West London in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted he was "ashamed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Rainbow Laces campaign and wrote a public message to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

Chelsea had the Premier League's pioneering black boss with Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
