In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
